On the Couch with Jimi Bani

Jimi Bani - photo by David KellyWho is Jimi Bani?
A remote area boy who was born and bred in the Torres Strait Islands and having been a mainstream storyteller in the country.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
If I’d worked harder when I was a kid, I would’ve loved to be a professional basketball player.

Who inspires you and why?
My late father. Because he taught me to be me and not try to be someone you’re not.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Keep telling stories. I’m in one of the most powerful mediums in the world. Film, Television and Theatre industries.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Back in the Torres Strait Islands. You are free. Great fishing.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Fresh water holes around Cairns Area. Because the weather in Cairns is always humid and the water is fresh.

What are you currently reading?
Shakespeare’s Othello.

Happiness is?
Family.

What does the future hold for you?
Big Cultural Responsibility.

A night of music, dance and stories from a Torres Strait Island superstar, Jimi Bani stars in My Name is Jimi, currently playing at the Belvoir St Theatre as part of the 2018 Sydney Festival until 21 January.
