On the Couch with Han Bates

Han Bates Arts Review On the CouchWho is Han Bates?
I am a graphic designer, illustrator, and coffee fiend from Melbourne. I currently live in St Kilda which is perfect for me, as I ride my bike everywhere, I love lying under the sun and I get visibly excited when I walk passed dogs in the street. I’m constantly drawing and have been creative since before I could crawl. I started studying graphic design in my late teens and have been obsessed ever since!

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Learn how to tattoo! I would love to be able to take my illustrations to a completely different platform and use my skills to decorate some skin.

Who inspires you and why?
Ken Taylor, he’s an illustrator and designer and his work blows my mind! All of his pieces have crazy amounts of detail, and are beautifully intricate. The passion and drive that he has is what inspires me the most.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I wish I could flick a switch in everyone’s minds that gave them the body positivity they deserve. It’s something so many of us battle with everyday that’s so silly, when we are all beautiful.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
When I was 10 years old, my parents took me and my siblings to India to see where my father grew up. I would love to go back, I have so many memories even though it was so long ago. It is a completely different culture and a very eye opening experience.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Shanghai Dumplings in Tattersalls Lane, I love that place so much! From the soundtrack that plays on repeat, to the pumpkin cakes.

What are you currently reading?
Anything and everything that yourfriendshouse posts – it’s a digital publication that boasts a insanely varied range of content. Funny, sad, uplifting, current affairs, pop culture, informative, satirical… you name it they post it!

What are you currently listening to?
Childish Gambino’s new album, Awaken My Love.

Happiness is?
Pug videos, soy lattes, Seinfeld binge sessions and sunshine.

What does the future hold for you?
I just want to keep drawing, refining my skills and doing what I love.
