On the Couch with Genevieve Kingsford

Genevieve Kingsford Arts Review On the Couch - photo by Colin Page PhotographyWho is Genevieve Kingsford?
A 24 year old nerdy Melbourne girl, with the world’s biggest sweet tooth, way too much energy and an obsession with musical theatre.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
My undergraduate degree was a Bachelor of Behavioural Neuroscience at Monash University, so I’d be working in that field. Speech pathology, art therapy and midwifery are all fields that interest me!

Who inspires you and why?
Judy Garland – She’s so at home performing. The joy she shares is infectious. Julie Andrews – watching her work it’s a masterclass in poise, elegance, articulation and beauty. Michelle Obama – powerhouse female who has used her platform for such amazing work. And my mum – wisdom beyond words, she is the definition of unconditional love.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Day to day I try to encourage empathy. Curiosity is better than judgement and if we treated each other with more compassion and open-mindedness, I think we’d make a kinder place to live. If I suddenly became fabulously wealthy a main priority would be to help the homeless. The current situation in Melbourne is atrocious and to think people are going without fundamental basics of food and shelter is heartbreaking!

Favourite holiday destination and why?
My favourite holiday destination is New York. My mum, twin sister and I took a trip for the first time in 2013. The city is so alive. We saw a tonne of shows and somehow managed to fit in most major tourist sites, all in eight days. I’ve been keen to get back ever since!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I try to take them to my parents’ farm near Mount Macedon. Spending time there is almost addictive. It’s so peaceful.

What are you currently reading?
I’m currently re-reading the Harry Potter series. I haven’t read them for years. Just. So. Good.

What are you currently listening to?
I boarded a few months ago and I’m still riding the Hamilton train. Love it!

Happiness is?
Listening to your favourite soundtracks. Cuddling my cat and dogs. Being in love. Forgetting how much time is passing when you’re having a really good conversation. Having a good ol’ sing. Family time.

What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully more shows! Definitely a trip to London. I lived there for two years and I’m desperate to get back! It’s the most amazing city and I made the most beautiful friends.
