On the Couch with Garry Scale

Garry Scale_AndyB PhotographyWho is Garry Scale?
About to co-host the 2015 Hats Off to the Hits.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I’d have been nicer to the young kids I’ve worked with. They are now employing.

Who inspires you and why?
Suppose we are talking in the theatrical world? Am loving these performers who are not waiting around to “do” LA in pilot season but are creating exciting cooperative theatre.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Put lines down the centre of footpaths. There! I’ve said it.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Lorne on the Great Ocean Rd.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take then to, and why?
Always the Wato Bay Pub. A not so shabby view.

What are you currently reading?
Pickwick Paper (1 chapter a day) and The Narrow Rd to the Deep North

What are you currently listening to?
The renovations next door being drowned out by the screams of the baby downstairs.

Happiness is?
Getting that little bit older and starting to work a few things out.

What does the future hold for you?
I just gained permanent employment as a teacher librarian at a beautiful public school here in Sydney. Permanent finally. At 58 with paid hols and sick leave. Last year I fundraised, built a theatre in the school and produced Last Post – a play set in Clovelly at the end of the first war. There will be a lot more of that.

Since graduating from NIDA in 1980, Garry has worked extensively in theatre, film and television. His stage credits include: Fiddler on the Roof, Measure for Measure, Las Vegas the Musical, Women of Lockerby, Love’s Triumph, Buddy, The Boy from Oz, The Wharf Review (Revue Sans Frontiers, Concert for Tax Relief), Comedy of Errors, Merrily We Roll Along, Only Heaven Knows, Carrie the Musical, and recently Bye Bye Birdie.

Garry has had a long association performing cabaret at Sydney’s Famous Tilbury Hotel, as well as performing at Showqueen and Hats Off! His film credits include: Prada Handbag, All Saints, Heartbreak High, Police Rescue, The Sullivans Hey Amigos!, Johnson & Friends and Billy’s Holiday.

Garry will be co-hosting Hats Off! to the Hits – a fundraising concert for Oz Showbiz Cares / Equity Fights AIDS on Monday 23 February at the Seymour Centre. For more information, visit: www.seymourcentre.com for details.
