On the Couch with Eva Kong

Eva Kong Arts Review On the CouchWho is Eva Kong?
I am a mother and a singer at Opera Australia!

What would you do differently to what you do now?
If I wasn’t singing, I think I would like to design and make furniture and homewares.

Who inspires you and why?
My best friend, who happens to be Maggie Beer, is the most inspiring person. She is always giving me positive vibes and immense support.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I volunteered to help the Syrian refugees while I was in Vienna in 2015. I met a lot of Syrian children and, as a mother, it made me so sad. I felt like I didn’t have much to give them but realised that I would use my voice and give them hope and happiness through music.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I love Raymond Island! I have been there a couple of times in the last few years and it is always so quiet and peaceful. It almost feels like we have our own private beach!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I always like to take my friends out to some of my favourite coffee spots and then to the beautiful nature spots that Australia has to offer.

What are you currently reading?
Be Real by Rick Bezet.

What are you currently listening to?
I Can’t Keep Up With You by Arlissa.

Happiness is?
Breathing in and out easily.

What does the future hold for you?
So many dreams! For example, I want to teach at my university in Korea, help the refugee children and so much more. All of my positive dreams and hopes keeps me going!

Eva stars as Chiang Ch’ing (Madame Mao Tse-Tung) in Opera Australia’s presentation of The Nixon Tapes (scenes from John Adams’ operatic debut Nixon in China) on Monday 5 June in the Concert Hall – Sydney Opera House. For more information, visit: www.opera.org.au for details.
