On the Couch with Emily Goddard

Emily Goddard AAR On the CouchWho is Emily Goddard?
A human, an actor, a theatre maker, a friend. Born & raised in Melbourne, with half a Yorkshian heart. I went to theatre school in Paris and now spend my days pretending to be people with far more dramatic lives than my own.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Working in the theatre is the best, most terrifying & satisfying thing in the world to me and I feel really lucky to be doing it. If I could change anything it would be to worry less, and finish the screenplay I haven’t started.

Who inspires you and why?
All the fearless storytellers. Kathryn Hunter has been my idol ever since I first saw her performing at Les Bouffes du Nord. Olivia Colman and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are my current obsessions. Also my Mum and her extraordinary generosity, and myself on the freaky days I manage to go to the gym at 6.30am.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
With superpowers: Make all the bad guys go away, end the refugee crisis, stop climate change. With my own powers: Be kind. To the planet, to others, to myself. And keep making art.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Wherever my nephews are. One of my brothers has lived overseas for the past ten years in some beautiful parts of the US and I love visiting them. Cape Cod, NYC & Estes Park in Colorado are my favourites so far.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The theatre or the Hot Springs in Mornington for a seaside escape.

What are you currently reading?
Feminism for the 99%: A Manifesto by Cinzia Arruzza, Nancy Fraser, and Tithi Bhattacharya.

What are you currently listening to?
A lot of nineties pop in preparation for Australian Realness – set in 1997. Thoroughly enjoying the nostalgia.

Happiness is?
A group hug with my family.

What does the future hold for you?
I’m working on Zoey Dawson’s brilliant hilarious tragic new play Australian Realness at the Malthouse Theatre from 16 August. Then in October I hit the road with a tour of my solo show – This is Eden. After that, the great mystery!

Emily stars in Zoey Dawson’s Australian Realness at the Malthouse Theatre: 16 August – 8 September 2019. For more information, visit: www.malthousetheatre.com.au for details.
