On the Couch with Emily Gare

Emily Gare AAR On the CouchWho is Emily Gare?
I’m someone who loves to stay really active so the circus lifestyle is something that works for me. Because of this I’m always looking for the next challenge whether that is in circus or other aspects of life.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I’ve been doing circus for more than half my life now, and because of being immersed in the circus community I wouldn’t want to be doing anything differently now. Being a part of circus isn’t just a job it is a lifestyle, and one that I love.

Who inspires you and why?
Deborah Pope, she has previously been an artistic director at Circus Oz, but I know her as my main trainer while in Wellington. She has coached me for eight years and Deb is truly one of the most incredibly inspiring people I know. There are no words to describe the huge impact that this incredible woman has had on my life, and I am so grateful that Deb has been apart of it. She continues to inspire me everyday.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Everyone does their own things to make a difference in the world whether big or small. I think that as a performer we are able to bring some happiness into people’s lives, through doing what I love.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Russia, I have never been to Russia but always have wanted to go. I love the language, and am a bit of an architecture nerd so Russia is always somewhere I’ve wanted to go. I would really love to travel around there for a few months.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I love taking friends to the Dandenong ranges and exploring the bush around there. A lot of my friends are also really active and enjoy doing things outside of the main city.

What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading The True Story of the Mansion Murders by Helter Skelter. I’ve never read a true crime book before but have always got into true crime shows, and thought I’d give it a go. I usually read classic books like The Catcher in the Rye.

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve recently started using Spotify, so a little bit from various artists. But mainly a playlist my friend Hamish Norris shared with me.

Happiness is?
Keeping up with important people in my life and making time to see them as much as possible. As well as training and exploring the city that I’m in.

What does the future hold for you?
Well I’m hoping that I will continue performing with inspiring and kind people like I am now. I love to travel so am hoping that I will continue to travel and perform.

Emily stars in Circus Oz’s latest production, Precarious, under the Big Top at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne from 29 June 2018. For more information, visit: www.circusoz.com for details.
