On the Couch with Drew Downing

An eager music maker and music enthusiast who loves to share his passion for the arts.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I wish I would have stopped being bothered by people’s options of me much sooner.

Who inspires you and why?
Quality arts educators blow my mind. Not only being able to teach a craft, but to inspire a student is something worth acknowledging.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Remove Vitasoy from every coffee shop to avoid that ghastly, disappointing first sip when you thought they’d be stocking Bonsoy because it’s 2018.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere I can just be left alone and not see anyone I know! I adore the USA and spending time on my own in NYC; Just strolling the streets and eating everything.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’m terrible at this. Maybe a visit to Southbank and Degraves Street. A trip to St Kilda and Acland Street is pretty iconic, too.

What are you currently reading?
Winnie the Pooh. I can’t stop smiling! I started reading classic children’s literature in 2016 and am loving it. Just So Stories is up next.

What are you currently listening to?
I like to leave my music on shuffle. It’s nice to be surprised by a song you weren’t expecting. One minute it’s Eternal Flame by The Bangles, and then it’s Pony by Genuine.

Happiness is?
A whole day of not having to talk to anyone.

What does the future hold for you?
Working with young people in the arts has always brought me joy. In more recent years I find myself spending more time as a writer and composer, which also brings me a lot of fulfillment. Trying to find a balance between the two is my ongoing battle! Being able to do both simultaneously, without one not jeopardizing the other would be excellent.

Drew will perform God Only Knows – The Music of Brian Wilson at Chapel Off Chapel: 22 – 24 June as part of the 2018 Melbourne Cabaret Festival. For more information, visit: www.melbournecabaret.com for details.
