On the Couch with Christopher Politis

Christopher-Politis-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Christopher Politis?
A dancer and creative who puts passion first. I’m a Melbourne based trained theatrical dancer. I have had the pleasure to work with some of Australia’s most renowned production companies and have performed several international gigs too. I believe in honest hard work and have always wanted to push myself outside the ‘dancer norm’ to do things differently and have a career that is unique, challenging and exciting.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I wasn’t performing or choreographing, I know I would still have to be doing something creative. I have always been drawn to mentoring and management. I recently completed a Digital Marketing qualification at RMIT University to extend my knowledge on technological progress within our industry. One day, I can see myself managing artists and businesses to expand their presence and career options.

Who inspires you and why?
At the moment I’m inspired by every artist I meet or get to work with. We went through a lot in 2020! Seriously! The cast I’m currently performing with; Matador, just finished the first tour for the year. We were all just so grateful to be back on stage and it absolutely blew my mind that everyone came back stronger, passionate and more fierce than ever!

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
In every living thing there is a desire to LIVE! We need to stop turning a blind eye to the way we as the human race treat animals. I’m an animal lover and I’m passionate about getting the education and facts out there. Imagine what the human race could achieve if we came together to protect, rather than destroy…

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I had the time of my life working in the Baltic’s. Specifically, Stockholm. It is just such a beautiful city that mixes the old medieval with the new and modern. They are just so forward thinking and progressive in their human rights, environment sustainability and incredible style!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I love taking good friends to The Fairfield boathouse. It is such a special hidden gem in Melbourne. Scenic walks, duck feeding, row boats and great food. I’ve been so many times and during any weather condition it has never disappointed. If you haven’t been, you must!

What are you currently reading?
For the second time I am reading, The subtle art of not giving a F*** by Mark Manson. It was a real game changer in my daily thought process. This book helps you to be more practical and be realistic in your life. As work and performing has returned and become more intense I’m visiting it again as it really helps to instil the importance of balance and appreciation in life.

What are you currently listening to?
2020 really got me into Podcasts. I’m really enjoying a new podcast called Message on the Machine. It’s Melbourne made and just consists of two fabulous friends who discuss all things LGBTQ(IA+). They are hilarious and lovable, and I really enjoy when they poke fun at each other!

Happiness is?
To me, happiness is about true connections with people. After 10 incredible years in the industry and putting all my focus into gigs and shows, my life goals have shifted a little. For me now, it’s all about connecting and surrounding myself with people who are genuine, inspiring and radiate love and kindness. This is how I have I found true happiness within my work. Happiness is coming off stage and having audience members come up to you and tell you that you uplifted them or taught them something deep about themselves. That is why I am loving the Matador journey so much. The characters we play are true reflections of ourselves and the people we come across in our life. The best gig is exchanging your passion with someone and touching their spirit.

What does the future hold for you?
In this industry you just never know what’s around the corner. Matador is about to open at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne. In such a short time this show has grown into a huge production. We have more shows and tours coming up and I am just enjoying riding this crazy bull!

Christopher stars as the Bull in Bass Fam Creative’s production of Matador – which will be presented at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre: 29 April – 2 May 2021. For more information and to book tickets, visit: www.ticketek.com.au or www.facebook.com/matadortheshow for details.
