On the Couch with Chloé Zuel

Chloe Zuel AAR On the CouchWho is Chloé Zuel?
I am Chloé Cherie Zuel and I grew up in the suburbs of Sydney. I did a full time performing arts course at ED5 International, and following that, spent 2 years working at Universal Studios Japan. My first show was Hairspray the Musical in 2010 and since then I’ve done, Legally Blonde the Musical, The Mikado, Les Miserables, Little Shop of Horrors, Rent, Porgy and Bess, Dusty, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Ragtime and West Side Story.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
For a point in my child-hood I wanted to be a writer, so maybe I would be a travel writer seeing as I love to travel.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m lucky enough to work with people in all different parts of our industry who inspire me with their work ethic, temperament, talent, drive and thick skin but I guess creatively I’m inspired by the phenomenon that is Beyoncé and the way she performs and the genius of Lin Manuel Miranda. I can’t believe ONE person created something as magical as Hamilton.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I do my small acts every day of trying to use less plastic, being more ethical in the way that I live be it through the food that I eat, companies I choose to support (by voting with my dollar and sending money on their products) and trying to reduce waste. Though it is easy to feel like these small acts don’t make a difference, I hope that they do. If I had the opportunity to influence the world on a larger scale then I would try my best to help drive down discrimination (of every form) which on some fronts seems to only be increasing…

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Milos in Greece! It has the most perfect temperature, the water is the brightest blue, the food is incredible and it’s the spot where my husband proposed to me.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Obviously the Central Market is an absolute favourite, but I also love Power Living Yoga and of course Adelaide Hills with it’s beautiful landscape and delicious wineries.

What are you currently reading?
On Eating Meat by Matthew Evans and Cilka’s Journey by Heather Morris

What are you currently listening to?
I’m still loving Maggie Roger’s Album (Heard It In A Past Life) and also some Lizzo and Solange.

Happiness is?
I love that I get to live in Australia whilst still getting to travel working in a job that I love, enjoying sunshine, beach, good food and time with my husband.

What does the future hold for you?
When I finish West Side Story I’ll go back to Sydney to start rehearsals for Six The Musical. I also anticipate a lot of time at the beach over summer wherever I can squeeze it in!

Chloé is currently starring as Anita in West Side Story at the Adelaide Festival Centre until 8 December 2019, before playing the sassy Catherine of Aragon in the upcoming Australian premiere of Six The Musical at the Sydney Opera House from January, and then Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre from April and Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre from June 2020.
