On the Couch with Chelsea McGuffin

Co Director and Performer of Wunderage. Director of Brisbane based circus company, Company2.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Lots of things and nothing. Lots of things have recently changed in personal and professional life so I have had lots of time to reflect on this and each day have a different answer. Today I am happy just trying to be who I am in this moment and not wish for too much more or less.

Who inspires you and why?
Music, art, everyday moments, my wonderful kids and the strength of women.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I try in my own ways to make small differences. Use less, want less, buy less. Creating work in a great express for me to try and find ways to connect my view of the world and hope it open’s a new door for someone else. And I would find way more money for arts and culture.

Favorite holiday destination and why?
That is my down time and a great time to be with my family, friends and in the garden.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I have a 2-year-old so out on the town is not a big thing in my life at the moment. Getting him to bed and staying up for some wines with friends is a perfect night out.

What are you currently reading?
Nothing at the moment. I am not a big reader. I like to come across things and be grabbed by them. But I find when I am in a creative process the mind is so consumed by it that I watch less, read less and focus in on the work.

What are you currently listening to?
At the moment I am loving a Spotify play list of the greatest folk songs. There is something about that era that is inspires me at the moment. I feel like I need a bit of radical thinking and change in my world.

Happiness is?
A cup of tea and a cuddle with the kids. A late-night phone call with a friend.

What does the future hold for you?
After Wunderage – Company2 heads to Edinburgh Fringe with Le Coup and then I head back to Brisbane. I am trying to find that perfect balance of making and creating and having as much time as I can with the family.  Not sure how possible it is but I hope the future holds a perfect balance of this.

Chelsea is the Co Director and Performer in Wunderage – a co-production between Circus Oz and Company2 at the Meat Market: 20 – 30 June 2019. For more information, visit: www.circusoz.com for details.
