On the Couch with Britni Leslie

Britni Leslie Arts Review On the CouchWho is Britni Leslie?
Britni has always had a flare for the dramatic, so it’s no wonder she has found her home on the stage. Most recently you would have seen her as Glinda in Wicked or in one of her self-written cabarets at The Butterfly Club. Before that you might have caught her performance as Elizabeth Benning in Young Frankenstein, or Mrs Corey in Mary Poppins with CLOC Musical Theatre.

Originally from Mobile, Alabama, she worked in Orlando, Florida, professionally for many years where she performed with Walt Disney World, The Orlando Repertory Theatre, Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, Sea World and Universal Studios. Soon afterwards, she packed her bags again to start an exciting adventure in New York City. While in the Big Apple she performed as Val in A Chorus Line and appeared in several cabaret shows across the city. She is very proud to now call Melbourne home! Britni is so excited to see what Australia has to offer!

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I wish I had taken my performing lessons more seriously when I was younger. I always loved to do it but never really wanted to spend the time. Now I work extra hard to make up for the fact that I only started taking my training more seriously in latter years. I don’t think performers should ever stop learning.

Who inspires you and why?
So many people. When I was younger I loved listening to Judy Garland and all the other greats. Now, I think any one that has the guts to follow their dream is an inspiration. I particularly enjoy a performer that has a quirk, like a unique voice or look. It’s great to see them become known for it! I just like people who can own who they are. Flaws and all!

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think if I had all the money in the world, I would make performing arts education more affordable. It’s such an important creative outlet for children, big and small. Imagine a world where everyone could pursue their dreams without the worry of money.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere near the ocean! Capri has been my favourite so far!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I love to show people around the many beautiful wine regions we have access to in Victoria. Getting to taste the wine is an added bonus!

What are you currently reading?
The Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. It’s pretty great.

What are you currently listening to?
Anything that is currently on Broadway. I’m a Broadway nerd.

Happiness is?
Getting to wake up everyday to someone or something you love. I am blessed to have a person and a dog whom I love very much. I am equally blessed to work in an industry where I get to pass on my knowledge of the stage to little minds.

What does the future hold for you?
Gosh! I hope it still holds a lot. More shows, more friends and more wine! Bourbon St. to Broadway is the perfect date night or girls night out. Whether you love a good show tune, a love story or a night of laughs, you can’t help but get caught up in this very funny heartfelt production.

Britni presents Bourbon St. to Broadway at The Butterfly Club for 5 nights from 28 June 2017. For more information, visit: www.thebutterflyclub.com for details.
