On the Couch with Beau Heartbreaker

Beau Heartbreaker oncWho is Beau Heartbreaker?
Beau Heartbreaker is the award winning character creation of comedian Selina Jenkins. Beau delivers hilarious tales of worldly adventures and brilliantly composed songs. Put simply, this is one woman performing as one very endearing bloke.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
This may come as a bit of a surprise considering my appearance, but I actually live and work on the family farm. Resembling the love child of Paul Kelly and Ned Kelly however, I’ve always secretly wanted to be a rock-star.

Who inspires you and why?
I’d be in the doghouse if I didn’t mention my mum Raelene. But in all seriousness, I’ve never met anyone who can put a positive spin on things the way my mum can. She once told me that my cousin Craig was as camp as a row of tents and I was as thick as a brick so as to help him bang his tent pegs in.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I often imagine how much better the world would be if it more closely resembled a flannelette shirt. A little more predictable and soft to the touch, embracing, long lasting and it wouldn’t cost much. And sure, it’d get a little faded, frayed and torn, but when they’re patched they bounce right back ready to endure a little more. So more flannelette, I’ll wear more flannelette.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
My cousin Craig and I took the caravan on the boat over to Tassie one time. Neither of us had been overseas before. It was a real treat.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take then to, and why?
I live in a place called the rural and I don’t get into town, or any town, very often at all. There is a tree on the way to the farm that has an uncanny resemblance to that bloke off the ‘Is Dom is Good’ salami ad that’s definitely worth a look.

What are you currently reading?
I had a good look over the V-Line timetable earlier today for the best train to catch into town. Not a great read. Probably wouldn’t place in my top five.

What are you currently listening to?
The Beaches soundtrack has been on high rotation in the ute of late. Probably best to keep that to yourself though.

Happiness is?
My dog by my side. It doesn’t get much better than that.

What does the future hold for you?
I couldn’t really say what the future holds for me. But my mum always says… “You get what you give Beau, so you better get givin’.” And I think she’s right on the money with that. Oh, and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Grab a ticket and come and say g’day.

After touring extensively throughout 2014, Beau’s newest self titled show has received awards, rave reviews and standing ovations from both national and international audiences, including 5 Stars in Indianapolis.

An artist who offers a ‘Money Back Quality Guarantee’ on their work is a rare find indeed. But it is a risk that the creator of this unforgettable character is more than happy to take.

You can catch Beau at the Melbourne Town Hall: 26 March – 19 April, as part of the 2015 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. For more information, visit: www.comedyfestival.com.au for details.
