On the Couch with Anthony Harkin

Anthony Harkin AAR On the CouchWho is Anthony Harkin?
I’m the youngest of four. Jack of many trades, striving to master some.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I’m addressing this every day. Even as I answer these questions. Procrastinate less… Remember what fearless feels like… Back yourself.

Who inspires you and why?
Right at this moment a guy called Brent. Touring nationally with theatre over the last decade and clocking off late at night, I have seen the growth of homelessness in our capital cities. Brent is sleeping rough but his outlook on life is incredibly positive. He’s focused on helping others and is engaged with his local community. It’s humbling and motivating.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Just be a decent person. I try to short circuit that part of my brain that makes a problem insurmountable. I try to stop and think how I can help in an immediate and real way. Have a chat, buy a meal or a coffee for someone who can’t. As a performer, I also hold fast to the idea that the creative arts can not only provide entertainment and an escape, but also challenge current concepts and provoke conversation to create change.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere there’s a beach. Preferably an empty one. When I unplug, I really like to unplug.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Depends where I’m living. Currently it’s Sydney so maybe jumping off the rocks at Lurline Bay, or a swim at Clovelly.

What are you currently reading?
I’m making my way through my girlfriend’s bookcase. You’ve caught me on the gender equality shelf. Clementine Ford’s Fight Like a Girl and Annabel Crabb’s The Wife Drought.

What are you currently listening to?
Avishai Cohen – Live at the Blue Note. Oscar Peterson Trio – Night Train.

Happiness is?
Always in the last place you look. If in doubt watch the footy and yell at the telly!

What does the future hold for you?
Post July I actually don’t know. Maybe more theatre. Hopefully a holiday. Definitely a lot of AFL.

Anthony is currently starring as Herbie in Gypsy at the Hayes Theatre Co until 30 June 2018 For more information, visit: www.hayestheatre.com.au for details.
