Nothing to Lose

Nothing to Lose_HLFollowing a sell-out season in Sydney earlier this year, Force Majeure’s Nothing to Lose comes to Melbourne as part of Malthouse Theatre’s 2015 season, and as a highlight of this year’s Dance Massive program.

‘Fat’ is a powerful little word, full of baggage and judgement. Nothing to Lose challenges the dominant perception of what a dancer’s body should look like, in an undaunted exploration of fat bodies in motion, and uses the real-life experiences of people with larger bodies to question the word’s connotations, challenge aesthetic norms and reclaim a performative space for individuals of size.

“We are interested in challenging the notion that professional stages are prohibitive spaces for larger, fat dancers,” says Champion. “Talented, captivating movers can come in all shapes and sizes. Nothing to Lose is a celebration of the bigger body in all its wonderfully expressive capacity.”

Known for its interrogations of the modern psyche, Force Majeure, led by award-winning director and choreographer Kate Champion, collaborates with artist, filmmaker and fat activist Kelli Jean Drinkwater. This Melbourne presentation marks Champion’s final project as Artistic Director of Force Majeure, the company she founded in 2002, and is the last chance to experience this critically acclaimed work that and reshapes expectations.
