In 2019, the writers of award-winning musicals Prodigal, Once We Lived Here and Virgins: A Musical Threesome, Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank, gave a musical voice to Miles Franklin’s iconic heroine Sybylla Melvyn in My Brilliant Career.
The musical takes us into the world of fiery misfit Sybylla as she wrestles against the restricted life on offer for a young woman in rural Australia a hundred years ago.
My Brilliant Career was commissioned and developed through the Jeanne Pratt Musical Theatre Artists in Residence program at Monash University. The musical was directed by Petra Kalive and featured Luisa Scrofani as Sybylla Melvyn.
This Original Cast Recording features 19 tracks and includes the leading cast: Luisa Scrofani, Andrew Coshan, Natalie O’Donnell, Anne Wood, James Millar, Alister Kingsley, Melanie Bird and Jerome Javier.
The band, led by James Simpson, who also orchestrated the musical, features a score with a mix of period Victoriana and contemporary pop, that musically brings to life one of Australia’s most loved feminist characters.
