Muriel’s Wedding The Musical to head to Melbourne in 2019

Muriels Wedding the musicalGlobal Creatures has announced that the award-winning Muriel’s Wedding The Musical will play a limited season at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre from March before returning to Sydney at the Lyric Theatre from June 2019.

Stuck in a dead-end life in Porpoise Spit, Muriel dreams of the perfect wedding – the dress, the church, the attention. Unfortunately, there’s one thing missing. A groom. Following her dreams to Sydney, Muriel ends up with everything she ever wanted – that’s when things start to go really wrong!

A theatrical version of PJ Hogan’s iconic hit film, updated to today by the writer himself, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical features music and lyrics by Australian award winning songwriters Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall with additional songs by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson written for ABBA.

“I am thrilled to bring this new Australian musical to Melbourne after our sold-out premiere Sydney season last year,” said Producer Carmen Pavlovic. “Muriel’s Wedding The Musical brings one of Australia’s most iconic and loved films to the stage.  This is a brash musical with a very big heart featuring award winning music by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall.”

The stellar creative team behind the critically acclaimed production is led by theatre director Simon Phillips, set and costume designer Gabriela Tylesova, choreographer Andrew Hallsworth, lighting designer Trent Suidgeest, sound designer Michael Waters, music supervisor Guy Simpson and musical director Isaac Hayward. The highly anticipated cast announcement will be made in the coming months.

The home-grown musical celebrated its world premiere at the Roslyn Packer Theatre on 18 November 2017 as a co-production between Global Creatures and Sydney Theatre Company. A smash hit with audiences and critics alike, the season completely sold out.

At this year’s Helpmann Awards, the musical was the recipient of five awards including best original score (Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall), music direction, costume design, sound design and choreography.
