A biting comedy fuelled by urgency, honesty, anger, sex and alienation, Theatre Works presents the world premiere of Ross Mueller’s new play, Lifetime Guarantee for a limited season from 10 February 2017.
Charles is a Millennial who wants to have kids, live in Spring Street speculation ‘The Dream’, and for his lover Dan to hold his hand in public. Jodie is Charles’ assistant. She’s new in town. She can’t control her own human instincts but wants to take her industrial design to the next level.
Directed by John Sheedy – his first in the role as Theatre Works Creative Director, the production sees acclaimed Australian playwright Ross Mueller continue his search for truth and humour in places others might not look. His 2009 play Concussion won the New York New Dramatists Playwright exchange and ran a season to critical acclaim at Sydney Theatre Company. His work has been commissioned by Melbourne Theatre Company, Playbox, Canberra Youth Theatre, Hothouse and Radio National.
John Sheedy is an award winning director, most recently for The Rabbits starring Kate Miller-Heidke, and a past Artistic Director of Perth’s Barking Gecko Theatre Company. He has worked with Belvoir Street, Sydney Theatre Company and Bell Shakespeare.
Lifetime Guarantee reunites Ross and John after they first worked together in Ross’s theatre company, Geelong’s Postcard Productions in the early 1990s. The company focused on site specific theatre including Macbeth at the Youyangs, Arturo Ui in the old Geelong wool mill and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at the old Geelong Prison. They have since collaborated as Playwright and Director on Ross’s plays Hard Core (at Sydney’s Seymour Centre) and This Highway Home (for Geelong Performing Arts Centre).
“What I love about Ross’s work is he bravely explores themes where other playwrights don’t dare to tread,” says Sheedy. “Funny, adventurous and brutally honest, the audience will never look at a washing machine in the same way ever again.”
Ross and John are joined by an incredible team of creatives, including Kelly Ryall (composer), Ellen Stanistreet (designer), Martin Kinnane (lighting designer) and cast members: Mark Constable, Charles Purcell, Julian Dibley-Hall, Izabella Lena and Candy Miles.
A rock and roll comedy featuring property development, new love, sex tapes, divorce and a ’67 Mustang, Lifetime Guarantee is a brutal anthem exploring inexplicable love in a punishing world.
“Mueller is surely one of the most intelligent, formally adventurous and emotionally brave playwrights now writing in this country.” – Alison Croggon
