Jersey Boys to return to Sydney in 2018

Capitol Theatre Jersey BoysOne of the most successful musicals to play Australia in recent years is set to return, with the announcement that the blockbuster musical, Jersey Boys will play Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from August 2018.

“Having celebrated Jersey Boys becoming the 12th-longest-running musical in Broadway history, Dodger Theatricals, TEG Dainty and myself are thrilled to be opening Jersey Boys at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney in August 2018,” said Producer, Rodney Rigby.

Jersey Boys tells the true-life story of the rise to stardom of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, who were one of the most successful bands in pop music history. The band sold more than 175 million records and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for their worldwide hits, including Can’t Take My Eyes off You, Walk Like a Man, Bye Bye Baby, Sherry and Big Girls Don’t Cry – which all feature in the musical.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the enduring story and songs of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons continued to resonate with audiences worldwide while finding new legions of fans through the acclaimed musical.

Jersey Boys is one of the most successful shows in theatre history and as Australia’s home of musical theatre, it’s fitting that Sydney will host the return season of this acclaimed production,” said Mr Marshall. “We expect Jersey Boys to make a triumphant return to Sydney with more than 32,000 overnight visitors expected to travel to the Harbour City to see the production, delivering $21.7 million in visitor expenditure for NSW.”

The original Australian production of Jersey Boys opened in Melbourne in July 2009, and after 13 months the show moved to Sydney where it played for a further 15 months, making it one of the longest running musicals in both cities. Following a season in New Zealand, Jersey Boys returned to Australia, playing Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and a return Melbourne season.

Playing to more than one million people throughout Australia, Jersey Boys attracted critical acclaim – winning seven Victorian Green Room Awards including Best Production, Direction, Musical Direction, Choreography, Scenic Design, Lighting Design and Sound Design. It also won two Helpmann Awards – Best Musical and Best Music Direction of a Musical, and two Sydney Theatre Award including Best Production of a Musical.
