Home/Land: Project Another Country

Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan, Here, There, Everywhere Project Another Country, 2018 (detail)Inspired by the City of Casey’s people and surrounding environment, Home/Land: Project Another Country is set to explore stories of migration, family and home at Bunjil Place from 14 December 2019.

Part of Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan’s ongoing series Project Another Country – Home/Land marks the first major large-scale installation piece commissioned by Bunjil Place Gallery. Over the course of the exhibition, the gallery will house a model village created from thousands of small houses made by hand from recycled cardboard – in part symbolising the boxes used to pack up belongings when moving.

Community collaboration is central to the work of the Aquilizans. Created with the assistance of visiting individuals, families and community groups from Casey and beyond, Home/Land will become an imagined cityscape, fused with pieces sourced from previous projects by the artists created by communities across Australian and the world.

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, from Tuesday to Sunday, visitors will have the opportunity to make their own cardboard creations with daily Assemblage Workshops taking place between 11.00am and 2.00pm. With participants able to create objects, flora or dwellings to either take home or add to a special area within the Bunjil Place Gallery.

The result will be an ever-growing, ever-changing township – intended to be a unique reflection of the local community, and the common stories that bring us all together. At the end of the exhibition, parts of the work will be preserved and incorporated into future projects. The rest will be permanently disassembled for its transient existence.

After relocating from the Philippines to Australia in 2006, with five children in tow, Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan draw upon their personal experiences as well as the collective experiences of others to create works that express ideas of migration, family, relocation and home.

They now spend their time travelling between Brisbane and Manila, and are internationally renowned for their collaborative artwork, where they work collaboratively through workshops and art making activities to encourage storytelling and exchange between individuals, families and communities.
