Grey Gardens

Squabbalogic Grey GardensFrom the producers of the sell-out smash independent musicals Carrie and The Drowsy Chaperone, Squabbalogic Independent Music Theatre present the Sydney premiere of Grey Gardens at the Seymour Centre from 18 November 2015.

Adapted from the cult classic 1975 cult documentary by Pulitzer Prize Winning playwright Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife) and songwriters Scott Frankel and Michael Korie, the darkly thrilling, quirky and heart-breaking lives of Jackie Kennedy’s reclusive aunt and cousin hits the stage in this Sydney première production.

Exploring the dysfunctional relationship between former socialite Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Little Edie, as they languish in the derelict East Hampton manor known as Grey Gardens.

Directed by Squabbalogic artistic director Jay James-Moody (Man Of La Mancha), with musical direction by Hayden Barltrop (Sondheim on Sondheim) and choreography by Shondelle Pratt (Carrie The Musical), Grey Gardens will feature a cast of Sydney’s finest musical theatre talent. Beth Daly (A New Brain) will transform from Big Edie in the first act to Little Edie in the second, with Caitlin Berry (Ruthless!) and Maggie Blinco (Biddies) assuming the roles of Little Edie and Big Edie respectively.

Grey Gardens has been on the Squabbalogic bucket list for many years,” said Jay James-Moody. “The documentary is one of the most poignant and captivating character studies captured on film, and that same heartbreak and humour has been maintained for this exquisite musical theatre adaptation.”

This award-winning Broadway musical is a feast of tour-de-force performances, a gorgeous score, and intimate lyrics that the New York Times described as “An experience no passionate theatre-goer should miss.”
