Widely considered to be one of the most exciting new love stories of this generation, Queensland Theatre presents Nick Payne’s Constellations – an explosive, head in the stars comedy about love, fate and free will, at the Bille Brown Studio from 9 March 2017.
Lovers often say fate brought them together, and fate doesn’t get much credit after that. But in Constellations, every moment Roland and Marianne share is at the mercy of the infinite and unknowable universe.
A beekeeper and a quantum physicist – the odds of them getting together are astronomical. But when their worlds do collide, they keep on colliding, as all the possibilities of their life together – good, bad and ugly – flicker across the stage in a series of intricately-structured snapshots, from first date to farewell.
Following sold-out seasons in New York and London, it’s now Queensland’s turn to be delighted and moved by this quirky and charming romance, directed by Kat Henry and featuring Lucas Stibbard (Boy Girl Wall) as Roland and Jessica Tovey (Wonderland, Home and Away) as Marianne.
A graduate of the Royal Court Young Writer’s Programme, Nick Payne is a British playwright who studied at the University of York and subsequently at the Central School of Speech and Drama. His plays include: If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet which won the George Devine Award; Wanderlust; The Same Deep Water As Me, Blurred Lines and The Art of Dying.
Constellations opened at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2012 to rave reviews before moving to the West-End later that year. It won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Play, making Payne the youngest playwright to win the award at 29.
