Compass

Compass_ATYPWinner of the 2012 atyp Foundation Commission, Compass has been written by Jessica Bellamy and is directed by Sarah Parsons for a limited season at atyp’s Studio 1.

Welcome to orientation camp, kiddoes. This is one week in the bush you’ll never forget. It’s just you, your tutor group, and Mr Cobbin, learning to grow up, toughen up, and gain those survival skills.

Stop crying, Harley! Now everyone grab a compass.  Night one, Mr Cobbin’s called away for an emergency. Night two, he’s still not back. Night three, and the trouble begins.

A boy materialises on the edge of the campfire, asking for help. He’s been left out here, who knows how long, fending for himself, just barely surviving. He’s been watching them for a couple of days now. Can they help him?

Compass is a comedy with a sting in its tail, which asks how far we’ll go to hold on to what we think we deserve. If we are barely managing to take care of ourselves, how do we treat an outsider? Is our moral compass set in stone, or can we get lost?
