The Tony Award winning musical Come From Away will land on stage at a revamped Comedy Theatre in July 2019. The production will be the first outside North America, opening in Melbourne following a record-breaking run on Broadway.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren joined Come From Away Producer Rodney Rigby to announce the big news at the Comedy Theatre today – which will undergo a major refurbishment in time for the production.
“This is one of the biggest hits on Broadway and we’re proud to be bringing it exclusively to Victoria and our world famous East End theatre precinct,” said Minister Eren. “The only way to see Come From Away outside North America will be in Melbourne, with thousands of fans set to flock to our state to enjoy the show – that’s great news for Victorian jobs, businesses and tourism.”
The heart-warming musical tells the true story of the 38 planes and 6,579 passengers who were unexpectedly forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland in Canada after the September 11 terrorist attacks, virtually doubling the local population overnight. Written by Tony and Grammy nominees, David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the unique production uses hundreds of interviews taken from the community in Gander to deliver a powerful message about the kindness of strangers.
“Melbourne continues to lead the nation as its theatrical capital with the announcement of the refurbishment of the Comedy Theatre to host the Australian premiere of the Broadway musical Come From Away,” said Producer, Rodney Rigby. “A new Broadway musical about people coming together and having compassion for people in need, regardless of religion, race, or sexual orientation”
“Junkyard Dog Productions is thrilled to bring Come From Away to Melbourne next year, in partnership with Rodney Rigby and the team at Newtheatricals,” said Sue Frost and Randy Adams. Come From Away’s universal themes of hope and humanity have captured the hearts of audiences on Broadway, across the USA and Canada and we are thrilled to now be able to share it with Australians.”
Directed by Christopher Ashley, Come From Away features choreography Kelly Devine, with music supervision by Ian Eisendrath, scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, costume design by Toni-Leslie James, and lighting design by Howell Binkley. They are joined by sound designer Gareth Owen, with orchestrations by August Eriksmoen and music arrangements by Ian Eisendrath. In Australia, Musical Director Luke Hunter (Jersey Boys) joins the team with casting by Lynne Ruthven.
“Superb! Canadians Irene Sankoff and David Hein have forged a moving, thoroughly entertaining tribute to international amity and the indomitable human spirit.” – Variety
