COCK

RLP_Cock_sydney_AAROne of Britain’s hottest young playwrights, Mike Bartlett, explores sexuality and the agony of confusion in the Sydney premiere of Cock for Mardi Gras at Old Fitzroy Theatre from 3 February.

John has been in a stable relationship with his boyfriend for a number of years. But when he takes a break, he accidentally falls in love with a woman. Torn between the two, filled with guilt and conflicting emotions, he doesn’t know which way to turn.

His boyfriend is willing to wait for him to make a decision, but so is his girlfriend. And both are prepared to fight to keep him. As the pressure mounts, a dinner with both parties is arranged, and everyone wants to know: Who is John? What is he? And what will his decision be?

Cock has become an international hit since premiering at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2009. It went on to win the 2010 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in An Affiliate Theatre, and has garnered many international productions since including Off-Broadway, in Melbourne for MTC and in Brisbane for La Boite in 2014.

Mike Bartlett is a highly prolific and successful playwright in the UK, with a growing list of credits including King Charles III about the accession and reign of Charles, Prince of Wales (London, soon for Broadway), Bull (Best New Play at the National Theatre Awards), the stage adaptation of Chariots of Fire (Hampstead Theatre, West End) and the TV crime series The Town.

“One of the finest pieces of writing I’ve seen on Australian stages in years. Well worth seeing.” – Daily Review
