The high-octane rock musical based on Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album, American Idiot – finally makes its way down under for its Australian premiere season at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) from February 2017.
Winner of two Tony Awards and the 2010 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Show Album, American Idiot will transform the Playhouse into a grungy mosh pit, featuring an all-Australian cast and includes every song from Green Day’s album, as well as several songs from the follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown.
Developed by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), American Idiot boldly took the American musical in a new direction, capturing not just the sound of a generation, but also the frustrations, fears, dreams and challenges of life in the media-saturated, post-9/11 era.
American Idiot tells the story of three lifelong friends who are grappling with the decision to either challenge the status quo and break out of their aimless rut or to remain in the safe confines of their suburban existence. Their quest for true meaning in a world full of violence and dissolution leads them on a journey of self-discovery, heartache, and revelation.
To helm this exhilarating project is award winning Australian Director Craig Ilott (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Smoke and Mirrors). “It’s so rare to come across a piece as rich, stimulating and challenging as this,” said Ilott. “Ultimately it’s a rallying cry from the heart by one of the world’s best bands.”
With the full cast and live on-stage band yet to be announced this Australian premiere season of American Idiot promises to melt the walls of the Playhouse, QPAC.
